Båtsfjord is a small fishing town of about 2,900 (2026) on the Varanger Peninsula in northeastern Norway. Båtsfjord is one of Finnmark's most important fishing communities and is sometimes known as Fiskerihovedstaten (the Fishing Capital). The town lies in a fjord between mountains, with direct access to the Barents Sea.

Getting there

By car Road 891 is the main access road to Båtsfjord. It runs from the town through the mountains, where it meets a junction at Gednje. From there the road continues as Route 890 until it connects with the E6 highway, approximately 107 km away. There is a petrol station in Båtsfjord. It is also possible to transport a car (not a motorhome) on Hurtigruten, thereby avoiding driving the same way back. For example to Vardø, Kirkenes or Honningsvåg and save many kilometers.

By bus Snelandia is the brand name for the bus routes in Finnmark.

By boat Hurtigruten passenger ships calls here daily in both directions. There is a guest port near the town centre for people with their own boat.

By plane 1 Båtsfjord Airport (BJF IATA). with daily flights from Kirkenes, Tromsø and some local places.

By foot The distances in the town centre are short, so walking works fine. The distance from the Hurtigruten quai to the midpoint is 500 m. The town is spread out along the coast, and some parts are more than 2 km from the centre.
