Wadhurst travel guide

Getting there

Wadhurst is a short drive from the A267 via either the B2099 or B2100. From the A21, one can also get to Wadhurst by getting off at the Lamberhurst junction and taking the B2100. Wadhurst is close to the villages of Mayfield and Ticehurst. 1 Wadhurst railway station has half-hourly trains from London Charing Cross and Hastings. A bus runs from Tunbridge Wells.

Getting around

Wadhurst is relatively small and can be walked across in about half an hour.

See

Church of Saint Peter and St Paul. The church has a 34 metre spire and has elements dating back to the 12th century. On the floor of the nave is a considerable array of iron tombstones, a reminder of the Weald's history of iron making. In nearby Lamberhurst is Scotney Castle.

Do

A mile or so walk from Wadhurst is Bewl Water reservoir. A walk or cycle around the reservoir is 12½ miles.

Eat

Wealden Wholefoods. A hippy-dippy co-operative wholefood shop, with a small café at the back. Good for tea (including herbal tea), fresh fruit juices and vegetarian/vegan food. Vegetarians should try the hommity pie. Sonar Gaon, High Street. Indian restaurant and takeaway.

Drink & nightlife

The Greyhound. A pub dating from 1502, offering food, drink (including real ales) and accommodation. Has a small beer garden. The White Hart. The Old Vine. A lovely old pub on the road from Wadhurst to Lamberhurst, with a big open fire (in the winter), a decent pint of Harvey's, good restaurant and bar snacks

Sleep

1 The Bell in Ticehurst, High St, Ticehurst TN5 7AS, ☏ +44 1580 200300. Atmospheric 16th-century pub with rooms. Dining is good, but pricy for what you get. B&B double £150. (updated Dec 2024)
