Sudanese Pitch In To Help Ethiopians Fleeing Civil War

This Sunday The Taiwan Times with the aid of our friends at the Puntland Post will be focussing on north east Africa where open civil war in Ethiopia is being waged by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed against his own people in the Tigray region, Somalia, the country with the longest coastline in all of continental Africa is still coming to terms with its past troubles and is trying to get back on its own two feet, and Sudan, whilst taking in refugees fleeing from Tigray is also being courted by Egypt to aid in its objections to the huge GERD dam being built on the Upper Nile – an issue again involving Ethiopia.

All of this is taking place in the area geographically neighbouring Taiwan’s newest diplomatic ally, Somaliland.

This is the third part in that series of three articles.

El-Gadarif (PP News Desk) — Sudanese people in the El-Gadarif region bordering Ethiopia have stood by the recently arriving Ethiopian refugees providing timely assistance in the form of food and clothes.

More than seven thousand confirmed Ethiopian refugees have thus far crossed the border into Sudan due the Ethiopian civil war in Tigray in the north of the country – some reports carry much higher numbers.

Refugees were settled in an area not too close to the border.

People of El-Gadarif region pitched in to donate food and clothes to Ethiopian refugees.

Aid agencies have already warned of the looming catastrophe from the war if calls for de-escalation remain unheeded by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

“The refugee emergency in the northeast (of) Africa presents some challenges that affect (the) UNHCR’s effectiveness to respond to the situation because the number of refugees can snowball, but the assistance from Sudanese people shows solidarity with the Ethiopian people affected by the unexpected war” said a humanitarian worker in Addis Ababa.

Generosity and kindness: Sudanese people showing solidarity with Ethiopian refugees.

Yesterday a delegation led by the Sudanese Interior Minister Lieutenant General Idris al-Traifi paid a visit to El-Gadarif to assess the situation and explore how the Sudanese Government can further help the refugees.

Some of the Ethiopian refugees remember their days as refugees in Sudan during the 1980s famine.

The Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa has thus far rejected all calls for a de-escalation of military operations.
