IDF launches formal probe into March West Bank raid killing family and paramedics

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday that it has opened a formal investigation into the conduct of its troops involved in the March 2024 incident in the West Bank that resulted in the deaths of five‑year‑old Hind Rajab, her parents and two other relatives, as well as 15 paramedics who were providing emergency aid. The probe, ordered by the chief of staff, will examine whether the soldiers’ actions complied with the rules of engagement and international humanitarian law, and it will involve interviews with witnesses, review of video footage and forensic analysis of the site. The IDF said it would report its findings to the defense ministry and to the public once the inquiry is complete.

The incident occurred during a raid in the town of Qusra, where Israeli forces were pursuing suspected militants linked to a series of attacks on Israeli settlements. According to Palestinian health officials, the raid escalated into a violent confrontation that culminated in the killing of the Rajab family, who were reportedly unarmed civilians, and the subsequent shooting of paramedics who entered the scene to tend to the wounded. Israeli officials have maintained that the operation was aimed at dismantling a terrorist cell and that the soldiers acted in self‑defence when faced with hostile fire. They have demanded that Israel hand over those responsible and allow an external body, such as the United Nations Human Rights Council, to conduct a separate investigation. The Israeli government, while acknowledging the tragedy, has emphasized that any wrongdoing must be addressed through internal mechanisms, arguing that an external probe could be politicised and undermine the IDF’s operational security. The United States and several European capitals have called for a transparent and thorough inquiry, underscoring the diplomatic pressure on Israel to demonstrate accountability.

The outcome of the IDF’s internal investigation could have repercussions beyond the immediate incident. Israel’s security forces are a cornerstone of its regional stability, and perceptions of impunity can fuel further unrest in the West Bank, potentially spilling over into broader Israeli‑Palestinian tensions.
