Jamia Mosque
Nairobi, Kenya
Jamia Mosque is a mosque located on Banda Street, Nairobi, Kenya in the Central Business District. It is one of the city’s major Islamic institutions and serves Nairobi’s Muslim community, particularly for Friday prayers. The mosque was founded by Syed Maulana Abdullah Shah in 1902 and constructed between 1925 and 1933. It became an important centre of Muslim religious organisation during both the colonial and post-independence periods. It has also served as a venue for discussions involving Muslim religious, political and community leaders. A modern wing was added to the mosque complex in 1998. The complex includes a library, a multipurpose hall and offices associated with The Friday Bulletin and Horizon TV. The Jamia Training Institute, which was previously located within the mosque complex, was later moved to Jamia Towers. The Jamia Mosque retains a classic Arabic Islamic architectural style with extensive use of marble work and Quranic inscriptions. Its exterior is distinguished by three silver-coloured domes and two minarets. A row of commercial premises, including a clinic and pharmacy, is located along one side of the complex to provide rental income for the mosque's upkeep.
