Paraty (or Parati; Portuguese pronunciation: [paɾaˈtʃi]) is a Brazilian municipality located on the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is situated 258 kilometers (160 miles) from the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro. Along the Atlantic Ocean, the municipality has an average elevation of just five meters (16 feet) above sea level. It covers an area of 924.295 square kilometers (356.9 square miles) and has an estimated population of 47,668 inhabitants, resulting in a population density of 48.95 inhabitants per square kilometer. According to a 2014 estimate by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Paraty ranked 43rd among the municipalities of the state of Rio de Janeiro in terms of population.
