Tahlequah, Oklahoma is the Capital of the Cherokee Nation. It is also to home of North Eastern Oklahoma State University.

The oldest building, Seminary Hall, dates to 1889. (updated Dec 2025) 2 Cherokee National Capitol, 101 South Muskogee Avenue. Two-story government building designated as a National Historic Landmark and serves as a tribal supreme court.

Float the Illinois River. The Illinois River flows through Tahlequah, and has been designated a Scenic River since the 1970s. 1 Cherokee Heritage Center. Just to the south in Park Hill, Oklahoma, the center includes a reproduction of an ancient Cherokee Village, the Cherokee National Museum- including the renowned Trail of Tears Exhibit, and the Cherokee Genealogy Center.
