Understand
Sosnowiec grew mainly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as an industrial and mining centre on the edge of the Upper Silesian conurbation. Coal mining, textiles, railways and heavy industry shaped its urban fabric, but many mines and factories declined or closed late in the 20th century. The city is sometimes described locally as a “city of four cultures”, reflecting the Polish, Jewish, German and Russian communities that influenced its development during the industrial boom. Today the main things to see are industrialists’ villas, churches, former factory districts, railway architecture, modernist public buildings, parks, mosaics and the historic centre around the main railway station. The central area is around Sosnowiec Główny, 3 Maja, Modrzejowska, Warszawska, Zwycięstwa and Małachowskiego streets. Małachowskiego has become the main strip for cafés, bars, restaurants and small cultural venues.
