Understand

Marktl is famous throughout the world as the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI. Joseph Ratzinger was born here on 16 April 1927 and elected Pope in Rome on 19 April 2005. Cardinal Ratzinger, former dean of the College of Cardinals and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of faith, he retired on February 28, 2013 for reasons of age.

Getting there

By plane The nearest major international airport is Munich Airport (MUC IATA) (also called "Franz Josef Strauss"), 92 km from Marktl, with a journey time of approximately one hour by car. As the second largest airport in Germany, it is connected to numerous cities. Salzburg Airport (SZG IATA), located 68 km from Marktl, is also easily reachable after about an hour's drive.

By car From the west (Munich): via the B12 federal road via Mühldorf am Inn and Altötting (partly already developed as the A 94 motorway). From the north: Via Federal Highway B20 or B299
