城市概覽
The town of Palafrugell is the centre of the municipality, where there are also the rural villages of Santa Margarida and Ermedàs, the village of Llofriu, at the foot of Les Gavarres, together with the coastal villages of Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc, Tamariu and Aigua Xelida. In this way, the municipality lives divided between the sea and the interior, although the importance of its coastline has conditioned its social and economic development, transforming a traditionally Taper town into a fully consolidated tourist and service centre.

The first object of the Museum is the building itself, a modernist factory that contains the various exhibition spaces around a small cork grove. The church of Sant Martí de Palafrugell was built between 993 and 1019, but from this construction only a wall lock is preserved in the current "string room". At the end of the 14th century and in the 15th century, the church was restored and expanded. In addition to religious use, the church was also used for municipal assemblies and as the headquarters of the guilds. Between 1588 and 1599 the church was expanded again. The central nave is configured as it is now. Between the 16th and 17th centuries the façade was built, but the wars of the mid-century stopped the work on the bell tower. Between 1760 and 1763 the Fonda Chapel was built and around the same time the rest of the southern chapels were expanded, forming a kind of lateral nave. The bell tower project is probably from 1762, but the Great War against the French in 1793 left it unfinished again. (updated Feb 2026)
