Kursk is a city and the administrative center of Kursk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Kur, Tuskar, and Seym rivers. It has a population of 440,052 (2021 census).
Kursk is the oldest city in the oblast, recorded in 1032 as part of the Kievan Rus'. It became the seat of a small eponymous principality in the 13th century, before passing to Lithuanian rule in the late medieval period, and then to Moscow in the early modern period. Kursk has served as the seat of regional administration since 1779. The area around Kursk was the site of a turning point in the Soviet–German struggle during World War II and the site of the single largest battle in history.
It is possible that the name 'Kursk' either derives from the Kur River, with the -sk suffix added at the end, or the Proto-Slavic word krivъ, which means "Bent" or "Curved".

History More than anything else, the city is known for the Battle of Kursk in summer 1943. It did not happen within Kursk itself, but at the nearby village of Prokhorovka, where the Soviet Army won a decisive victory against Nazi Germany, and turned the tide of World War II in Europe. The engagement was the largest tank battle ever.

By train from Kursky Terminal in Moscow. Firmenny daily sleeper train Solovey #105/106 comes to Kursk early in the morning covering 537km. Other direct destinations are Saint Petersburg, neighboring Belgorod and southern resort Anapa.

The city's hilly landscape is cut through by rectangular quarters as it was planned by the 17th city engineers. The city's airport is 7km north and serves flights to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi.
