Karytaina

關於Karytaina

Karytaina is in Arcadia. Built on a steep hillside above the Alfios River, it is one of the most dramatically located settlements in the region. The village is dominated by the ruins of a Frankish-era castle and surrounded by rugged mountains, gorges, and stone bridges. Karytaina combines medieval history with a strong traditional character, making it a striking stop in inland Arcadia.

Historically, it played an important role during the Frankish occupation and later in the Greek War of Independence, when it served as a strategic stronghold.

如何抵達

Karytaina is reached by road from Megalopoli (around 30–40 minutes) or Tripoli (about 1 hour). The drive follows winding mountain roads through the central Peloponnese. Public transport is limited, so a car is strongly recommended.

Church of the Zoodokhos Pigi. On the western edge of Karytaina, this modest 15th-century church is overshadowed by its striking freestanding bell tower. Built in Byzantine cloisonné style with decorative brick patterns and dog-tooth ornament, the tower likely dates to the late 13th or 14th century. (updated Jul 2026)

必看景點

1 Karytaina Castle. Dominating the village from a rocky peak, Karytaina Castle is a 13th-century Frankish fortress reached by a steep footpath. Likely built around 1254 for the Bruyères family, it later passed into Byzantine hands in the early 14th century. The ruins include sections of a triangular defensive circuit, towers, and large cisterns. The main reward is the sweeping view over the Alfeios Valley and surrounding mountains. (updated May 2026) 2 Stone bridge of Karytaina. Just below the modern road bridge at Karytaina, a remarkable medieval stone bridge spans part of the Alfeios River gorge. Originally built in the Frankish period and later restored in 1439, it remained in use until relatively recently. Four of its original arches survive, along with a small chapel built onto one of the piers. It is easily reached via a short path from the roadside. (updated May 2026) Church of the Panagia tou Kastrou. Just below the castle on the hillside, this small domed church is a worthwhile short detour on the climb up. Though likely dating to the Ottoman period and lacking frescoes, it stands out for its finely carved column capitals of much earlier style. (updated Jul 2026) Church of Ag Nikolaos. Near the base of the path to the castle, this distinctive church is notable for its unusual cluster of five domes. Despite earlier attributions to the Byzantine period, it is now generally dated to the early 18th century and reflects the town’s later prosperity. (updated Jul 2026)
