Karystos is a seaside town on the southern tip of Evvia, looking across the narrow strait toward the Greek mainland. It serves as the gateway to Mount Ochi, a rugged and windswept massif known for its ancient drakospita (“dragon houses”). The town’s small fortress and scattered ruins reflect its layered past, while its position makes it a natural stop for travellers arriving by ferry from Rafina.

By ferry The most common route is from Rafina (near Athens) to Marmari (about 1 hour). From Marmari, it’s a 15 km drive or bus/taxi ride to Karystos.
By road Drive from Athens via Chalkida (bridge to Evia) and continue south (approx. 3–4 hours total).
By bus KTEL buses connect Athens to Karystos, often via Chalkida.

1 Bourtzi Castle (guarding the harbour). A small Venetian-era tower, the town’s most recognisable landmark. It dates to the 13th century and once formed part of Karystos’ coastal defences. Despite its name, it is constructed from grey-yellow stone and occupies a naturally defensive site with dramatic views over the bay.
