Hietzing a residential area which used to be a village once, but gained importance as the Schönbrunn Palace was erected nearby – a very beautiful area for a stroll among old villas. From the center of Vienna it is located to the west along the Wien River. Hietzing has around 3/4 of its surface classified as greenspace including the Lainzer Tiergarten. During the Second World War, the district suffered smaller bomb damage since it has no major industries or railway stops. The public Austrian TV and radio station ORF has its headquarters on the Küniglberg.

From the centre the underground line U4 runs to Hietzing. The district is also deserved by the trams 10 and 60, as well as bus lines 8A, 56A, 56B, and 58A. A lot of Hietzing is walkable, but hilly. The train stations Meidling and Hütteldorf are not too far away from Hietzing.

1 Schönbrunn Palace (Schloss Schönbrunn) (The subway line U4 goes to the stop Schönbrunn. Trams 10 and 60 stop at "Schloss Schönbrunn", as well as the bus line 10A.). Apr—Jun 08:30–17:30, Jul—Aug 08:30-18:30, Sep—Oct 08:30-17:30, Nov—Mar 08:30–17:00. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. It is the ultimate palace experience in Vienna, because the Habsburg summer palace can be found here. It is comparable in grandeur to Versailles and is definitely a must-see in Vienna. The palace has seen its fair share of excitement over the years, including a meeting between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khruschchev at the height of the cold war. There are two possible tours available, the Imperial Tour showing 22 rooms and the Grand Tour showing 40 rooms. The shorter tour takes you into the west wing including the apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), as well as the imposing state rooms in the central wing. With the Grand Tour you can also visit the 18th-century rooms from the time of Maria Theresa. No photos, video taping, or backpacks allowed inside. The palace is wheelchair-accessible.; If you visit during late November to late December, or during Easter, then there will be a Christmas/Easter market open, where you can buy small gifts. A beautiful nature reserve which was once the Emperor's private hunting wood; on the grounds is the Hermesvilla, the favorite mansion of Empress Elisabeth. It has several 2-10 km hiking trails.
