城市概覽

Geraki was an important medieval settlement, flourishing under Frankish and later Byzantine control. Its hilltop castle and the scattered remains of churches and houses from the Byzantine town create one of the most evocative historic landscapes in Laconia—often compared, on a smaller scale, to Mystras. Today, the modern village sits below the ruins, surrounded by olive groves and farmland, and retains a peaceful, rural character.

如何抵達

Geraki lies inland, roughly midway between Sparta and the eastern coast of Laconia.

By car: The easiest access is via Sparta (about 30–40 minutes’ drive). Roads are sealed but can be narrow in places. Public transport: Limited bus services connect Sparta with nearby villages, but schedules are infrequent—check locally.

必看景點

1 Geraki Castle. The main attraction is the ruined medieval town and castle above the village. Originally fortified by the Franks in the 13th century and later developed by the Byzantines, the site includes defensive walls, gates, and the remains of houses. Several Byzantine churches survive within the enclosure, some with fragments of frescoes. The views across the Laconian countryside are excellent. (updated Jun 2026) 2 Church of Zoodochos Pigi. Just below the western wall of Geraki Castle, this small, partly ruined hall church stands out for its unusual north–south orientation. It preserves a finely carved Gothic doorway from the 13th century and fragments of 14th-century Byzantine frescoes, including a depiction of Christ Elkomenos near the entrance. (updated Jun 2026) 3 Agios Georgios tou Kastrou. The principal church within Geraki Castle’s enclosure, this seemingly simple three-aisled basilica reveals a more complex history on closer inspection. Built in two phases—likely a Frankish chapel of the mid-13th century later expanded under Byzantine rule—it preserves traces of fresco decoration and an unusual mix of architectural styles. Inside, look for the marble templon and the distinctive pierced marble shrine, possibly linked to a Frankish noble tomb. (updated Jun 2026) 4 Church of Agia Paraskevi. A small 14th-century domed church at the foot of the path to Geraki Castle, preserving much of its fresco decoration, including a notable donor portrait on the west wall. (updated Jun 2026) 5 Church of Agios Athanasios. A 12th– to 14th-century domed cross-in-square church near the entrance to Geraki, notable for its heavy use of ancient spolia and surviving Byzantine fresco fragments. (updated Jun 2026) 6 Church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos. A simple 13th-century barrel-vaulted church, notable for re-used Roman inscription slabs from Diocletian’s Price Edict and well-preserved early 14th-century frescoes. (updated Jun 2026) 7 Church of Evaggelistria. The earliest chu
