Elassona is is a small town in Larissa in northern Thessaly, at the foothills of the southern slopes of Mount Olympus. It acts as a quiet regional centre for surrounding farming and pastoral communities, and is best known as a gateway to the monasteries and hiking routes of the Olympus range.

Elassona has a long history, with ancient settlement in the wider region and a Byzantine and Ottoman past reflected in scattered churches, monasteries, and stone bridges. Today it is a relaxed provincial town with agriculture, livestock farming, and small-scale trade forming the backbone of the local economy. It is particularly associated with sheep and goat herding, and local dairy production—especially feta cheese—remains an important tradition.

Elassona is accessible by road from:

Larissa (about 40 km south-east) via well-maintained regional roads Katerini (to the east) via mountain routes crossing towards Olympus Trikala (west) via Thessaly’s interior road network There is no railway station in Elassona; the nearest major rail hub is Larissa, with bus connections onward. Regional buses connect Elassona with nearby towns and villages, though services are not frequent.

The modern town is compact and easy to walk. Key sights include small squares, local churches, and traditional neighbourhoods. While not a major monument town, Elassona offers a sense of everyday Thessalian life framed by impressive mountain scenery.

In town 1 Monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa. Just above the town stands the most important monument in the area, the fortified Byzantine monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa Monastery. Founded in the 13th century, it features later frescoes and strong defensive walls, reflecting its dual religious and protective role in a turbulent frontier region. The views over the town and toward Olympus are particularly rewarding. (updated Jun 2026) 2 Muharrem Paşa Mosque. The Muharrem Paşa Mosque was built in the 17th or early 18th century during Ottoman rule, and is attributed to Muharrem Paşa, an Ottoman provincial governor (pasha). The minaret collapsed in the 20th century, but the building’s core prayer hall still survives in a ruined and partly deteriorated state. (updated Jun 2026) 3 Stone bridge of Elassona. The Stone Bridge of Elassona spans the Elassonitikos River just outside the town centre. Built in the Ottoman period (likely in the 18th–19th century), it is a traditional single-arch bridge constructed of local stone, serving as an important crossing point for rural routes linking the surrounding villages with Elassona. (updated Jun 2026) 4 Ottoman Customs House. The Ottoman Customs House is one of the surviving administrative buildings from the Ottoman period in Elassona. Built in the 19th century, it was used for regulating trade and taxation in this small but strategically placed town at the edge of the Thessalian plain and the approaches to Mount Olympus.
