Chalon-sur-Saône is a town in Saône-et-Loire. It is the largest city in the department (although not the capital) and was a hub of road and river transport already as a Roman city.

Chalon-sur-Saône lies in the south of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in the east of France. It lies on the Saône river and was once a busy port, acting as a distribution point for local wines which were sent up and down the Saône river and the Canal du Centre, opened in 1792.

History Objects of La Tène culture have been retrieved from the bed of the river. This culture flourished in the late Iron Age, from about 450 BC to the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. As the Roman city Cavillonum Chalon served as a river port and hub of road communications, of the Via Agrippa and side routes.

如何抵達

The Autoroute du Soleil (A6) passes by the city, coming in from Beaune (25 km) and Dijon (50 km) in the north and Mâcon (55 km) and Lyon (100 km) in the south.

1 Château de Germolles. near Givry, 9  km west of Chalon-sur-Saône. The only surviving late medieval pleasure palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. (updated May 2025) 2 Musée Nicéphore-Niépce, 26, quai des Messageries, ☏ +33-3-85-48-41-98. Museum dedicated to Nicéphore Niépce, who was a pioneer of photography. He also invented one of the first internal combustion engines, which is on display. In addition to his collections and some of Louis Daguerre, who became a partner of his son, the museum covers photography in general. 3 Abbey of Saint-Philibert (in Tournus, 25 km to the south, halfway to Mâcon).
