Castiglioncello began as an Etruscan village at the foot of the Livorno hills. The beauty of its hills, bays and pinewood has inspired artists and painters, in particular the painters of the Macchiaioli school. It is known as "the pearl of the Tyrrhenian". Castiglioncello sea has been awarded a blue flag by the European Union.
