A relatively new mountain town located near Piatra Neamţ, Bicaz is a good base for trips to Bicaz canyon, into the Ceahlau massif or to the large Bicaz (Izvorul Muntelui) reservoir.

By bus There are very frequent buses from Piatra Neamţ (a half hour trip), several buses from Gheorgheni (1½ hours) via the Bicaz canyon, 4-5 buses from Iaşi (3 hours), two from Cluj (7 hours) and Târgu Mureş (5 hours), one from Bucharest (6 hours). Most of their schedules are available on autogari.ro.
By train Bicaz is reached by two commuter trains from Piatra Neamţ (travel time around 45 minutes) and one direct train from Bucharest (a 7-hour trip). Timetables can be found on the railway operator [https://www.cfrcalatori.ro/ CFR website].

1 Izvorul Muntelui Lake (Lake Bicaz, Lacul Izvorul Muntelui). A reservoir on the middle course of the Bistrița River, 4 km upstream from the town of Bicaz in Neamț County. The lake is bypassed on its northeastern shore by the national road DN15, which connects Piatra Neamț to Toplița. On the left bank, near the dam, there is a tourist port. In addition to the existing boats, there are dinghies, pedal boats, wooden houses and a floating hotel. Additional accommodation facilities exist on both banks, in the form of agro-tourism guesthouses. (updated Mar 2026)
2 Ceahlău Massif (Masivul Ceahlău) (from the east and north, it can be reached starting from DN15, and from the south from DN12C). A mountain range belonging to the Eastern Carpathians in Neamț County. The highest peaks are Ocolașul Mare (1907 m) and Toaca (1904 m). There are trails that take 3½-6½ hours. A large lake created by a landslide in 1837. Ceahlău massif (just north west of town). One of the most impressive parts of the Eastern Carpathians. Lacul Bicaz (Izvorul Muntelui) (Bicaz Lake) (north of town). The largest artificial lake in the country.
