We know that everyone in the world is worried about the war between Israel and Gaza because of the fact that hundreds and thousands of Palestinians are being forced to relocate and hundreds of them are being killed every day in the air strikes that are done by the Israeli side. Now, we are not saying that Hamas is totally innocent in all this but the fact that Hamas’ actions have a consequence on people of Gaza is really sad and unfortunate. Having said that, we also saw Israel agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza in order to release their hostages. Now that they have their hostages released, it is seen that the air strikes have resumed and the ground operations are also going on.
Amidst all this, UN has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and also started voting on the resolution but it is known that the US vetoed this resolution which means that it did not pass and the ceasefire will not be going forward. It is reported that “Thirteen Security Council members voted in favour of a brief draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates on Friday, while the United Kingdom abstained.” Deputy US ambassador to the UN said “While the US strongly supports a durable peace in which both Israel and Palestine can live in peace and security, we do not support calls for an immediate ceasefire. This would only plant the seeds for the next war, because Hamas has no desire to see a durable peace, to see a two-state solution,”
Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays said that Guterres’s invocation of Article 99 of the UN charter was extremely rare. “He [Guterres] has not done it before. In fact, formally invoking this hasn’t happened since 1989,”, Bays report adds. “The people of Gaza are being told to move like human pinballs – ricocheting between ever-smaller slivers of the south, without any of the basics for survival. But nowhere in Gaza is safe”, Guterres said to the council. He invoked Article 99 of the UN charter to bring to the attention of council members “any matter which, in his opinion, may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security”.
