We reported yesterday that the NATO members, including the US President Biden, are meeting in Lithuania to discuss about the developments in NATO as well as to approve applications from new members wanting to join the alliance. It is also known that Turkey has now supported the bid from Sweden to join NATO which means it is most likely Sweden will be the next NATO member. Between all this, the Ukraine President Zelensky feels like he has been betrayed by the NATO members as US President Biden rejected Ukraine’s application to join NATO and they have not given them a timeframe as to when their application can be up for discussion. Due to this, the Ukraine President took to Twitter today morning.
Ukraine’s President burst out his anger on Twitter saying that “It’s unprecedented and absurd when [a] time frame is not set neither for the invitation nor for Ukraine’s membership. While at the same time vague wording about ‘conditions’ is added even for inviting Ukraine,” and also said that by not giving a timeframe, Russia is being encouraged and “motivated” to do whatever it wants to Ukraine. However, as we mentioned yesterday, if US and others decide to invite Ukraine to NATO then we can write it on a wall that the Russians will be massively triggered and that could be the start of WWIII which no one wants right now. So all US, and others, can do right now for Ukraine is to support them with weapons to fight with Russia but inviting them to NATO can have dire consequences for everyone.
In a CNN interview, US President Joe Biden clearly mentioned that “he does not support Ukraine joining the alliance during its present war with Russia”. Biden also noted certain issues with Ukraine’s eligibility, such as a lack of democratization. While he said there should be “a rational path for Ukraine to be able to qualify to be able to get into NATO,” and did not go into specifics but it is clear that he believes that Ukraine President announcing no elections until the war is over did not go down well with the NATO members.
