You might have already read, on our website, or somewhere else about the rising tensions between China and Taiwan regarding the scheduled visit from Taiwanese President to the US and Central America but the fact that she is scheduled to have two stop-overs in the US is what has triggered the Chinese side and they have also warned of retaliations if the meeting goes through. Also, we had not heard any official word from either sides that the meeting between Taiwan President Tsai and US House Speaker McCarthy was scheduled to take place.

Having said that, we have the curtains raised on the development as US House Speaker McCarthy’s office have officially confirmed that he is meeting the Taiwan President on Wednesday in California. This is definitely going to anger China and we will have to wait and watch the actions that Chinese government takes due to this meeting. McCarthy’s office releasing a statement revealed that “the California Republican will host a bipartisan meeting with Tsai at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. The bipartisan group will include Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, who is a member of Democratic leadership, and the leaders of the select committee on China, among others”.

This is also a strategic move by the US side to have talks with Taiwan as they recently came face to face with China due to the balloon incidents which were eventually shot down by the US. A new report has emerged regarding those balloons which reveals that the Chinese side used them to spy on the US military bases and that they could be a security threat if similar events take place in the future. The White House has not revealed any statement on whether they support or not the meeting between US House Speaker and Taiwan President. The principal deputy press secretary of the White House said “I would refer you to the Speaker’s office and to President Tsai’s office for any details on a potential meeting,”. While China says that the meeting could be a violation of the “One-China” policy, the Taiwan President is all set and ready for a showdown.
