Sony is to launch its next generation PlayStation 5 video game console in November at a cost of US$500.

The launch date is set for November 12th, the company said Wednesday, and is expected to set the stage for a head to head with the new Microsoft Xbox Series X in the run up to Christmas although industry insiders are giving the Xbox the edge.

Both current console versions are now reaching the end of the ‘seven year cycle’ attributed to the lifespan of game consoles – having been launched in 2013.

As would be expected, both new consoles guarantee faster load times, with new games featuring improved graphics.

The Sony PlayStation console PS5 will be sold in two different forms – the standard Ultra HD Blu-ray disc version available for drive for US$500, with a digital-oriented version $100 less, although without a disk drive.

The launch day will first see PS lovers in Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea and the U.S. snapping them up, with fans elsewhere around the world having to wait till a week later.

The company yesterday previewed some of its new games including “Spider-Man: Miles Morales,” and “Hogwarts Legacy.” The former will be available upon launch, with the latter coming our at an undisclosed date in 2021.

The Microsoft Xbox Series X meanwhile will launch two days earlier, on the 10th, and will cost $500 in standard form. Pre-orders are set to begin next Tuesday.
