Venezuela quake causes $6.7 billion damage, UN urges aid

Recently, Venezuela experienced a series of powerful earthquakes that caused extensive damage across the country. According to estimates from the United Nations, the tremors resulted in approximately US$6.7 billion in direct material losses, equivalent to about 6 percent of Venezuela’s gross domestic product.

Venezuela, a nation in South America, has been grappling with severe economic and political crises in recent years. The United Nations, a global intergovernmental organization founded in 1945, is mandated to maintain international peace and security, promote friendly relations among nations, encourage international cooperation, and serve as a coordinating hub for member‑state actions. Its headquarters are in New York City, with additional offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, The Hague and other cities. The UN’s six principal organs are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, the Secretariat and the Trusteeship Council, complemented by a range of specialized and related agencies.

The United Nations plays a pivotal role worldwide, especially in economic and social development. In recent years it has made significant contributions to sustainable development, poverty reduction, human‑rights protection and environmental stewardship. The organization also conducts numerous peacekeeping missions aimed at preserving local peace and security. The Venezuelan earthquake disaster has had a profound impact on residents’ lives and livelihoods, and the UN’s loss estimate underscores the severity of the event.

In the aftermath of the quakes, the Venezuelan government and the international community have been working to conduct rescue operations and rebuild affected areas. The United Nations is actively providing assistance, including humanitarian aid, technical support and financial resources. The disaster has attracted global attention, prompting countries and international bodies to call for aid and support to help Venezuela navigate the crisis.

The seismic disaster is expected to pose even greater challenges to Venezuela’s economic and social development. UN projections indicate that the event will have long‑term economic repercussions, such as a reduction in GDP, heightened poverty and increased unemployment. Consequently, the international community will need to sustain assistance and support to facilitate Venezuela’s recovery and reconstruction.

For Taiwan, although the Venezuelan earthquake disaster has no direct link, its regional and global implications merit attention. Taiwan, when confronting natural disasters, can learn from the international community’s experience and practices, including strengthening disaster prevention and emergency response capabilities, and providing humanitarian assistance. Moreover, Taiwan can play a larger role in international cooperation and aid by offering technical expertise, financial contributions and humanitarian assistance to Venezuela and other disaster‑affected nations.
