Turkey Launches Operation Heroes-34, Arresting 119 ISIS Suspects Across the Country

The Turkish Ministry of Interior recently announced the launch of a nationwide counter-terrorism operation, codenamed "Heroes-34," which has resulted in the successful arrest of 119 suspects allegedly linked to the extremist group Islamic State (ISIS). Orchestrated by the General Directorate of Security and intelligence agencies, the operation involved coordinated raids across multiple provinces. Authorities stated that the detainees are suspected of participating in the group's illegal activities and attempting to infiltrate the country for terrorist purposes. Interrogations and legal proceedings are currently underway.

Due to its unique geographic position, Turkey has long served as both a bridge between Europe and Asia and a frontline for competing geopolitical interests. Bordering the Black Sea to the north and the volatile regions of Syria and Iraq to the south, Turkey’s extensive borders have made it a potential transit route for ISIS militants. Since 2013, ISIS has carried out numerous major terrorist attacks in Turkey, including nightclub shootings and suicide bombings, resulting in significant civilian casualties. Consequently, the Turkish government has prioritized counter-terrorism as a pillar of national security, frequently conducting sweeps to dismantle latent cells of extremist groups and prevent the resurgence of terrorism.

Although Turkey announced significant progress in northern Syria in 2017, the remnants of ISIS have not been entirely eradicated; instead, they have shifted to underground activities, continuing to recruit new members via social media and the internet. Analysts note that this large-scale arrest operation reflects the high level of vigilance maintained by Turkish intelligence agencies regarding extremist infiltration. In recent years, Turkey has strengthened border surveillance and collaborated with international intelligence services to sever routes used by foreign fighters to enter conflict zones, while working to prevent extremists from planning acts of sabotage within its borders.

From a geopolitical perspective, Turkey’s status as a NATO member means its domestic stability directly impacts regional security in Europe. With a population of over 86 million, Turkey maintains a secular constitutional system; however, as a Muslim-majority nation, Ankara faces the ongoing challenge of balancing the preservation of social stability and cultural diversity against the ideological infiltration of Islamic extremism. As geopolitical dynamics shift, Turkey’s effectiveness in combating ISIS serves as a strategic asset in its engagement with Western allies, positioning the country as a crucial partner in containing regional instability.

For Taiwan, although the island is geographically distant from the Middle Eastern front and does not face a direct threat from ISIS, such events hold significant value for understanding the global counter-terrorism framework and regional security. As a vital node in global supply chains, Turkey’s political and social stability is directly linked to the smooth flow of Eurasian trade. Furthermore, these counter-terrorism operations highlight how extremist groups utilize transnational networks for infiltration in the digital age. As a highly digitalized society, Taiwan can draw upon international counter-terrorism practices to enhance its critical infrastructure security, improve cyber-intelligence detection capabilities, and prevent foreign malicious actors from using digital platforms to mobilize domestic unrest.
