Sudanese Military Repels Rebel Drone Attacks, Casualties Mount Amid Rising Tensions

Local time on the 22nd, Sudan's military reported that the town of Dilling in South Kordofan Province was attacked by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) without warning, and the Sudanese military successfully repelled the attack. Additionally, at least five civilians were killed in El Obeid, North Kordofan Province, on the 21st at local time due to an attack.

The Rapid Support Forces were established by former Libyan militia leader Hemait Al-Hafiz in 2013 and have been viewed as the main ally of the Sudanese government forces ever since. However, the RSF has been criticized for its actions during the Libyan Civil War.

During the Sudanese civil war, the RSF has been one of the main opposition forces, competing for influence with the opposition organization led by Hassana Abakil. In 2021, RSF leader Mihdi Abbasher launched a coup, toppling the government of Hassana Abakil, but was defeated by the Sudanese military. Since then, the RSF has been in confrontation with government forces.

Recently, the conflict between the RSF and government forces has escalated, resulting in severe fighting in various parts of the country's south. The UAV attack is part of this conflict, and the Sudanese military has issued a statement vowing to take severe disciplinary action against the RSF.

In response to civilian casualties, the Sudanese government has begun to conduct rescue operations and has launched emergency aid in affected areas.
