Severe crash in northern Peru highland jungle kills at least five

A serious traffic accident in the highland jungle region of northern Peru has claimed at least five lives. The crash occurred near the city of Jaén, where a truck that lost its braking ability collided with multiple vehicles, resulting in heavy casualties.

Jaén is a key city in the Cajamarca region and serves as the capital of Jaén Province. Situated in the highland jungle area, it lies a considerable distance from the capital, Lima. The city’s history dates back to 1549, when it was a small settlement called San Leandro de Jaén. It was later renamed Jerez de la Frontera and Nueva Jerez de la Frontera before receiving its current name, Jaén de Bracamoros, in April 1549. Jaén also hosts the Catholic Apostolic Vicariate of Jaén, also known as the Saint Francis Xavier Apostolic Vicariate.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck, traveling at high speed, lost control after its brakes failed and struck several vehicles, including private cars and a bus. Local police and emergency responders arrived quickly to rescue the injured and manage the aftermath. Authorities have confirmed that at least five people died in the incident, with numerous others injured.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, especially in mountainous and jungle areas where road conditions are poor and traffic safety awareness is limited, often leading to severe collisions. The regional government has implemented measures to improve road safety, such as strengthening traffic regulation and upgrading road quality, but accidents remain a serious social problem.
