Saudi Arabia Proposes Omani-Mediated Two-Week Ceasefire to Ease Yemen Humanitarian Crisis

Recently, Saudi Arabia submitted a proposal to Oman requesting its mediation for a two-week ceasefire between the Houthi movement and the Saudi-led coalition. Issued by the Saudi Foreign Minister, the move aims to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and create room for future political negotiations.

The Houthi movement has controlled northern Yemen and the capital, Sanaa, since 2014, and has repeatedly launched airstrikes against Saudi Arabia and its allies, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. The Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to restore government control and combat the Iran-backed Houthi forces. The conflict between the two sides has caused prolonged economic collapse and a humanitarian disaster.

As a regional neutral state, Oman has long played a mediating role in the Yemeni conflict. Its capital, Muscat, has hosted diplomatic talks on numerous occasions and facilitated a preliminary ceasefire agreement in 2022. Saudi Arabia chose Oman partly because of Oman's relatively independent geopolitical reputation, which allows it to maintain a balance between the two parties.

From the Saudi perspective, this ceasefire proposal not only reduces military costs but also helps enhance its leadership image in the Arab world. If the ceasefire succeeds, Saudi Arabia can further leverage Oman's diplomatic network to secure international support for its actions while reducing its sensitivity to oil price fluctuations.

The Arab news agency Al-Akhbar reported on this proposal this week under the theme of "neutral mediation." Since its inception, the newspaper has been known for supporting Hezbollah's stance and is critical of the regional policies of Saudi Arabia and the United States. Its reporting style combines independence with radicalism, and its interpretations of Middle Eastern affairs are often seen as politically biased. This report also highlighted its focus on Oman's diplomatic role and pointed out Oman's critical function in facilitating peace negotiations.
