Romania F-16 Jets Shoot Down Intruder Drone in First Direct Interception

A Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet successfully shot down a Russian-made Geran-2 drone near Padina in Buzau County. This marks the first time a Russian drone has directly intruded into Romanian airspace since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. The Romanian military promptly took decisive and substantive defensive action, drawing intense international attention to the security posture of NATO's eastern flank.

The incident occurred in southeastern Romania. As a member state of the North Atlantic Organization (NATO), Romania shares a lengthy border with Ukraine. Ever since Moscow launched its large-scale military operations against Ukraine, Romanian airspace has repeatedly been affected by the war, with debris from Russian drones or missiles falling in border regions. However, previous occurrences mostly involved near-misses or detected trajectory anomalies, whereas this marks the first time an enemy drone has clearly penetrated deep into Romanian territory and been shot down by a fighter jet, indicating a continuous escalation in the spillover risks of the regional conflict.
