Protesters in Red Sea State Confront Police Amidst Widespread Power Outages and Scorching Heat

Citizens of Red Sea State in Sudan have taken to the streets to protest widespread power outages and the sweltering heat in the cities of Suakin and Jubayt along the main highway connecting Port Sudan to Darfur.

Due to the persistent rise in temperature, the Red Sea State Meteorological Department issued a high-temperature warning at the beginning of the year. Faced with the severe power outages affecting residents, protesters gathered on the main highway, causing disruptions to traffic. Security forces were deployed to restore order and maintain public safety.

Located on the eastern coast of the Red Sea, Port Sudan is Sudan's main commercial center and its primary port city. The city has a population of 394,561 and is an important urban center in Red Sea State. Port Sudan serves as Sudan's primary export city and a crucial hub for international trade.

From April 2023 to January 2026, the government operated Port Sudan as a temporary capital due to the inability of the capital city, Darfur, to function normally due to conflict. Port Sudan has also become a refuge for Sudan's internally displaced population.
