Israeli Airstrikes Kill Two Hamas Members, Target Ongoing Smuggling of Arms into Gaza.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has recently carried out multiple precision strikes against the Gaza Strip, claiming that in independent air raids, it successfully killed two senior members of Hamas who were allegedly involved in arms smuggling. Hamas, which was founded during the 1987 Intifada, is a Palestinian Islamist organization with both political and military wings (Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades). Following its victory in the 2006 Palestinian Legislative Council elections, its political legitimacy and de facto governance over Gaza became closely linked. Facing international pressure to disarm and continuous military encirclement, Hamas is undergoing a historically critical transformation in its influence in Gaza, but its remaining military networks and smuggling activities remain a primary justification for Tel Aviv's hardline stance.
