Hubei struck by massive wedge tornado, 12 dead, hundreds injured.

A large wedge tornado struck Ezhou and Huanggang City in Hubei Province yesterday, killing at least 12 people, injuring hundreds, and causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. The storm’s impact was extensive, with residents and buildings suffering severe harm.

A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that extends from the ground to the base of a cumulonimbus or cumulus cloud. They usually, though not always, appear as a condensation funnel that extends from the cloud base, accompanied by near‑ground rotating debris and dust. Most tornadoes have wind speeds below 180 km/h, a width of about 80 m, and dissipate after traveling only a few kilometres. The most extreme tornadoes, however, can reach wind speeds over 480 km/h, diameters exceeding 3 km, and can remain on the ground for more than 100 km.

Tornado types include multi‑vortex tornadoes, land‑based tornadoes, and waterspouts. Waterspouts are characterized by a spiral funnel‑shaped airflow connected to a large cumulonimbus or cumulus cloud. They are usually classified as non‑supercell tornadoes, developing over bodies of water, but there remains debate over whether they should be considered true tornadoes. These spiral air columns typically develop in tropical regions near water bodies.

Hubei Province lies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and has a subtropical monsoon climate. Summers in the region are prone to thunderstorms and tornadoes. Ezhou and Huanggang are located in eastern Hubei on the Jianghan Plain, an area with relatively high population density. The tornado caused significant loss of life and property.

The Chinese government and local disaster relief teams have activated emergency mechanisms and are conducting rescue and relief operations. Meteorological agencies are closely monitoring the weather and warning residents to take precautions against severe weather.

For Taiwan, the tornado in Hubei, while not directly connected, serves as a reminder to strengthen preparedness and response to severe weather. Taiwan is situated in eastern Asia on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, and its summers also experience thunderstorms and tornadoes. Consequently, Taiwan’s meteorological agencies and disaster relief teams need to enhance monitoring, early warning, and public disaster awareness to reduce losses and injuries from severe weather.
