Former Bangladesh high official charged over measles outbreak and child deaths

Recently, a court in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, received a complaint accusing former interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, former Health Adviser Nur Jahan Begum, and two other health officials from Yunus's cabinet of being linked to the country's measles outbreak and child fatalities.

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, with a population of approximately 36.6 million, making it the second-largest city in the world and one of the most densely populated urban areas globally. Dhaka holds significant cultural, economic, and scientific importance in the Southeast Asia region, ranking fourth in South Asia and 55th globally in GDP. Located in the Ganges Delta, the city is adjacent to the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleswari, and Shitalakshya rivers. Dhaka is also the world's largest Bengali-speaking city.

The Dhaka region has been inhabited since the 1st century AD, developing into a modern city in the 17th century when it served as a provincial capital and commercial center of the Mughal Empire. Dhaka was once a pre-industrial city of the Mughal Empire for a total of 75 years (1608–1639 and 1660–1704). The city is the center of Bangladesh's textile industry and was formerly one of the most prosperous cities in the world. Mughal ruler Jahangir named the city Jahangirnagar in honor of his own name. The city's affluent Mughal elite class was once the political and economic center of the region.

Yunus is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, having received the award in 2006 for his contributions to the microfinance sector. He previously served as Bangladesh's interim Chief Adviser, during which time he worked to improve the country's health and education systems. However, recent measles outbreaks and child deaths have sparked widespread concern and criticism, bringing the roles of Yunus and other officials into question.

For the Bangladeshi government, the measles outbreak and child fatalities present a serious challenge that requires effective measures for control and prevention. The government needs to strengthen its health system, raise public health awareness, and cooperate with international organizations to share resources and experience in addressing this challenge.

For Taiwan, this incident is of significant importance for understanding international public health challenges and the health systems of developing nations. Taiwan possesses rich experience and advantages in the field of public health, such as its rapid response and control during the SARS epidemic. Taiwan can share its experience and technology with Bangladesh and other developing countries to jointly address public health challenges and promote the development of global health. At the same time, Taiwan also needs to monitor the development of international public health events, learn from the experiences of other nations, and draw reference and lessons for the development of its own public health system.
