Villa Mairea

Villa Mairea is a villa, guest-house, and rural retreat designed and built by the Finnish modernist architects Aino Aalto and Alvar Aalto for Harry and Maire Gullichsen in Noormarkku, Pori, Finland. The building was constructed in 1938–1939. The Gullichsens were a wealthy couple and members of the Ahlström family. They told the Aaltos that they should regard it as 'an experimental house'. The Aaltos treated the house as an opportunity to bring together the architectural and interior design themes that had been preoccupying their practice to that point. Today, Villa Mairea is considered one of the most important buildings designed by the Aalto studio. In July 2026, Villa Mairea, along with 12 other Aalto Works, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
