Dehradun (Dēhrādūn, pronounced [ˈd̪ɛɦɾaːd̪uːn]), also known as Dehra Doon (DAIR-ə DOON) is the capital and most populous city of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the administrative headquarters of Dehradun district and the headquarters of the Garhwal division. Dehradun has served as the state's interim capital since the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000; Gairsain was designated the summer capital in 2020. The city lies in the Doon Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Shivalik Range to the south and the outer Himalayan ranges to the north. Dehradun has a generally temperate climate, with hot summers, cool winters and substantial monsoon rainfall. Dehradun came under the rule of the Gorkhas in the early 19th century before being incorporated into the British-administered territories following the Anglo-Gorkha War. Under British rule, Dehradun developed as an administrative and military centre and later became part of the newly formed state of Uttarakhand in 2000. Dehradun is an important administrative, educational and research centre. It is home to institutions including the Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, as well as several prominent schools and government research and training organisations.
