Wei Chuan Dragons win first-half title, pitching holds key to playoffs

In the 2024 Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) season, the Wei Chuan Dragons secured the first-half championship, allowing them to enter the preparatory phase for the postseason ahead of schedule. According to the CPBL tournament format, the first-half champion advances directly to the playoffs. Successfully advancing to the Taiwan Series would significantly boost the team's exposure and commercial value. Therefore, the Dragons' strategic focus for this season extends beyond merely winning games to deploying the most suitable lineup in critical moments.

During a recent press conference, manager Yeh Chun-chang pointed out that postseason outcomes often hinge on pitching performances. Compared to the prolonged attrition of the regular season, postseason games carry intensified pressure and sharper opponent tactics, making pitcher stability and depth crucial. Yeh stated that the Dragons will center their strategy around the pitching staff, arranging starting and relief rotations to ensure they can suppress opposing offenses during critical innings. This strategy is based not only on past postseason experience but also on the overall performance and health of this season's pitching staff.

Regarding the selection of the pitching roster, Tseng Jen-ho's participation has become a focal point. Since joining the team, Tseng has delivered solid performances in both starting and relief roles, leveraging his combination of fastballs and breaking balls. However, after evaluation, manager Yeh believes that maximizing effectiveness during the high-intensity, short-duration postseason requires ensuring pitchers have sufficient stamina and recovery time. Consequently, the coaching staff is still monitoring Tseng's physical condition and recent pitching performance. If he fails to reach the expected form before the postseason, it may be difficult to include him in the starting or key relief roster.

The catcher configuration has also drawn attention. The Dragons' catching depth is relatively thin this season, and they are expected to carry only two catchers into the postseason to minimize defensive redundancy. Nevertheless, Giljegiljaw Kungkuan and Li Chan-yi all possess a certain degree of catching experience and have demonstrated good chemistry with the pitchers during practice games. The coaching staff believes that if these three players can provide sufficient support in defense and base-running prior to the postseason, they can serve as viable backups, ensuring that starting pitchers receive stable game calling.

From an overall strategic perspective, the Dragons' postseason approach demonstrates a high reliance on pitching resources and reflects the team's investment in starting rotation and bullpen depth this season.
