Yilan Steel Plant Fire Extinguished Quickly With No Casualties Reported

A fire broke out late last night at an industrial zone in Dongshan Township, Yilan County. According to reports received by the Yilan County Fire Bureau, the blaze occurred inside a local factory specializing in steel and metal processing and manufacturing. Because the plant housed various industrial chemicals including toluene in addition to metal processing machinery, the situation at the scene was initially highly tense, leaving nearby residents on edge during the late hours. Fortunately, thanks to the rapid mobilization and all-out firefighting efforts of the fire department, the blaze was brought under control and successfully extinguished in a short period. The incident resulted in no casualties or trapped personnel, which can be considered a fortunate outcome amidst the misfortune.

According to preliminary information obtained by the fire bureau, the fire occurred during the late-night hours when most factory workers had already gone off duty, leaving only a small number of personnel on-site. The sudden flash of fire and thick smoke in the middle of the night alarmed plant personnel and nearby neighbors. After receiving the emergency call late at night, the fire bureau immediately dispatched personnel and vehicles from several neighboring platoons, including Dongshan, Luodong, and Yilan, to the scene for rescue operations. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that flammable chemical substances such as toluene were stored near the ignition point. To prevent high temperatures from causing the chemicals to explode or triggering a larger-scale spread, the incident commander decisively deployed protective water lines for cooling and isolation, while quickly positioning water lines to enter the plant for a coordinated attack. After intensive efforts, the fire was finally extinguished completely, and continuous smoke-exhaust and cooling operations were carried out to prevent reignition.

As a common organic solvent, toluene is widely used in metal processing, coatings, rubber, and various chemical synthesis industries. However, toluene is highly flammable, and its vapor easily forms an explosive mixture when combined with air. This was the primary reason why police and firefighters did not take the Dongshan steel plant fire lightly. Under industrial safety regulations, facilities storing such hazardous chemicals must strictly adhere to standard operating procedures, including fire-compartment zoning, ventilation, and keeping away from ignition sources. Although this fire did not reach the chemicals and cause catastrophic consequences, whether the factory's internal chemical management and fire safety protection facilities were properly implemented will remain a key focus of subsequent investigations by relevant units.

Regarding the exact cause of the fire, the Fire Investigation Division of the Yilan County Fire Bureau dispatched professional forensic personnel back to the scene this morning to conduct detailed inspections. Investigators will gradually clarify the point of origin and the initial combustible material by examining the burn patterns, signs of electrical short circuits, machinery and equipment overheating, and comparing surveillance footage from the factory grounds. In addition, competent authorities such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Ministry of Labor may also intervene to review whether the plant complies with current industrial safety regulations regarding hazardous material storage, fire equipment maintenance, and nighttime safety management, in order to prevent similar safety hazards from threatening the community and workers again.
