Tragic Taiwan Highway Crash Leaves Family Grandfather and Five Relatives Dead and Injured

On the section of road in Luoshan Village, Fuli Township, Hualien County, a family of five spanning three generations with the surname Yan from Taitung were involved in a traffic accident while driving along Provincial Highway 9 at around 11:00 a.m. on the 25th of this month. The accident resulted in one fatality and five injuries, among which the grandparents and the daughter sustained severe injuries, with the daughter succumbing to her injuries, while the other three sustained minor injuries.

Provincial Highway 9 is known for its scenic views, but due to its numerous mountain curves and limited visibility, it is frequently a high-incidence section for traffic accidents. In recent years, the number of tourists traveling from Taitung to Hualien has continued to rise, with many families choosing to drive themselves to enjoy the Taroko Gorge and Qixingtan, which also increases risks due to prolonged driving and driver fatigue.

According to reports from the Directorate General of Highways under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Taitung County Police Bureau, the vehicle involved was a small passenger car traveling at a speed of approximately 70 kilometers per hour. Witnesses stated that an oncoming vehicle rapidly overtook them without ensuring a safe distance, causing the bodies of the two vehicles to collide. The accident scene has been cordoned off, and ambulances transported the severely injured to Hualien Hospital for emergency treatment. The daughter passed away before arriving at the hospital due to the severity of her injuries. The police are investigating the cause of the accident and will track down the driver of the vehicle involved.

This tragedy has not only inflicted indescribable pain upon the Yan family but has also sparked discussions about road safety within the local community. Family members stated that the grandparents were already under long-term care, while the daughter was a high school student in the prime of her studies; this sudden loss has plunged the entire family into endless grief. The local government has also stated that it will assist the victims' families in handling medical expenses and related compensation matters.
