Taiwan High Court Orders Jail and No Visits for Taichung Oil Refinery's CEO Over Cancerous Chemicals.

A Taichung district court has ruled that Chang Ming-rong, the CEO of Chung Lo Oil and Fat Company, be held in custody without bail in connection with an alleged case of excessive carcinogenic substances. In May this year, Taiwan Sugar Corporation had already discovered that Chang Lo's plant was exceeding the standard for benzene hexachloride, yet it did not suspend production.

According to the Taichung district court, Chang Ming-rong allegedly violated the Food Safety Management Act and the Toxic Substance Control Act, leading to the benzene hexachloride exceeding the standard. Taiwan Sugar Corporation knew about the issue in May but took no measures to halt production, implying that Chang Lo Oil and Fat Company continued production despite knowing about the issue, potentially exposing more people to hazardous materials.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that it will ask local governments to investigate the situation and review the production process of Chang Lo Oil and Fat Company to ensure a safe factory environment. The FDA will also communicate with Chang Lo Oil and Fat Company to understand the company's handling of the situation. Given the potential significant impact on public health safety, the FDA must conduct an investigation as soon as possible and take appropriate measures.
