Nantou Arson Suspect Arrested After Attempting Acid Attack Following House Fire

On December 12, a residential fire broke out on Fanpu Road in Nantou County's Caotun Township. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found that multiple pieces of furniture inside the house had been burned, and two motorcycles parked outside were also engulfed in flames. Although the fire was quickly brought under control, the structural damage to the house was severe, forcing the entire building to be demolished. An initial inspection by firefighters revealed a large amount of gasoline inside the house, suspected of being used to start the fire. Police subsequently launched an investigation and arrested a suspected perpetrator in a grassy area where the homeowner was located.

According to preliminary statements from the police, rather than trying to escape the fire, the homeowner first poured gasoline into the house and ignited it, causing the massive blaze. Afterward, he attempted to find hydrochloric acid in the bushes, planning to splash the chemical onto others. During the search, police discovered that the homeowner was holding a bottle of hydrochloric acid, and residue was also found in nearby bushes, confirming his intention to use the acidic substance for a secondary attack. The suspect has been detained by police and will be subjected to further investigation.

This incident serves as another reminder that rural areas face a relatively high risk of fire due to the use of gasoline as fuel and energy for daily life. According to statistics from the National Fire Agency under the Ministry of the Interior, property losses and casualties caused by residential fires in Nantou County have continued to rise in recent years. Compounding the issue, some rural households lack adequate fire protection facilities and safety education, making it often difficult to escape or extinguish fires in a timely manner when they occur.
