Famous Kukui Oil Importer Scandal Exposed: Adulterated Oil Contained Known Carcinogen Benzene

The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office recently launched a comprehensive investigation into a case involving renowned kucha oil products found to contain benzapyrene, a first-class carcinogen, exceeding permissible levels. After conducting a thorough investigation of the supply chain, the prosecutors discovered that the Taiwan-based company, Wei Ge, allegedly imported low-cost and substandard kucha seeds from mainland China and mixed them into the domestic production process of high-quality kucha oil for profit.

The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office, in cooperation with the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors' Office, launched a nationwide search operation yesterday, simultaneously questioning seven individuals related to the case. The investigation is being conducted under the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act and suspicion of fraud. The government's determination to safeguard food safety has been demonstrated through this crackdown.

Following a marathon investigation and overnight interrogation, the prosecution believes that the procurement personnel, Chen, and the middleman, Chen, are involved in significant wrongdoing. They allegedly provided contradictory explanations regarding the origin, quality, and transaction details of the imported materials with the Chinese suppliers, suggesting a possibility of collusion or evidence tampering. To secure evidence and thoroughly investigate the conspiracy, the lead prosecutor decided to seek bail and a gag order for both individuals after the interrogation.

The Taipei District Court convened a hearing to review the request and, after finding their suspicion significant and recognizing the need for detention, officially ruled that both Chen and Chen be detained and gagged this evening.

Benzapyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound that mainly forms during incomplete combustion or high-temperature heating of organic matter. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified it as a first-class carcinogen, which can increase the risk of lung cancer, skin cancer, and digestive system cancer upon prolonged exposure or excessive consumption. Taiwan's health authorities have set strict standards for benzapyrene in edible oils to ensure public health.

High-end kucha oil has been perceived as a premium edible oil, boasting multiple health benefits such as soothing the stomach and reducing blood pressure. Its high price has attracted consumers prioritizing health and wellness. However, some unscrupulous businesses have taken advantage of this lucrative market by using low-cost, substandard materials to deceive consumers.

This incident originated from a previous market check when some high-quality kucha oil products were found to contain excessive levels of benzapyrene, prompting food safety authorities to issue a high alert and report the case to the investigation agencies. Through thorough evidence collection and big data analysis, the investigators uncovered that Wei Ge allegedly imported large quantities of low-cost kucha seeds from mainland China, which were then mixed into domestic kucha seeds without undergoing proper refining procedures, directly compromising the quality and safety of the final product.
