Drunk Driving Truck Kills 80-Year-Old Cyclist in Chiayi County

A tragic major traffic accident occurred recently in Chiayi County when an 80-year-old man riding a bicycle along a local village road was struck by a large truck, dying at the scene from severe injuries. According to preliminary police investigations and on-site inspections, a driver surnamed Fang was operating a large truck along the road when, presumably due to blind spots, failure to maintain a safe distance, or other driving negligence, he collided violently with the elderly bicyclist traveling in the same direction or at an intersection. Due to the massive size and weight disparity of the heavy truck, the cyclist was struck defenseless, collapsed on the spot, and sustained severe trauma across his body. When emergency responders arrived, the elderly man had already lost vital signs and was pronounced dead after emergency medical treatment failed to save him, leaving his family in deep grief. Out of respect for the deceased and the necessity of clarifying the cause of death, the prosecutors scheduled judicial examinations and an autopsy procedure.

Police subsequently administered a breathalyzer test to the driver, surnamed Fang, which showed that his breath alcohol concentration exceeded the statutory limit. Following a comprehensive assessment, the prosecution released him on a bail of NT$100,000 without filing a motion for detention.
