Driver Arrested in Kaohsiung After Crashing While Driving Under the Influence Faces Up to $180,000 Fine

A drunk driver caused multiple accidents in Kaohsiung's Cijin District yesterday evening, where he collided with a motorcycle, rammed into a flower pot and another motorcycle, but fortunately, no one was injured. According to a preliminary investigation by the police, the driver was taken into custody and handed over to the prosecutor's office for further investigation.

It is understood that the driver, after consuming alcohol in a bar, got behind the wheel and drove recklessly in violation of traffic regulations. Following a collision with a motorcycle on Mingcheng 3rd Road, the driver chose to leave the scene and continued driving until he crashed into a flower pot and another motorcycle before finally stopping. The driver was subsequently apprehended by the police and handed over to the prosecutor's office for investigation.

After investigating, the prosecutor's office found that the driver not only violated the driving while intoxicated ordinance but also constituted a public danger and would be held accountable under the law. According to Article 108 of the Highway Act, drivers who drive while intoxicated may face fines of up to NT$1.8 million or more, depending on the results of the prosecutor's investigation and the court's judgment.

This incident has also sparked concerns from the public, with many taking to social media to express their opinions, calling for stricter penalties for drunk drivers and greater road safety. Some also urged the government to strengthen enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

In response to this incident, the Kaohsiung City Government and the Department of Transportation have issued a statement, stating that they will handle drunk driving cases seriously and strengthen enforcement of traffic regulations to maintain road safety. They also urge drivers to drive safely and avoid the risks associated with driving while intoxicated.
