Taiwanese Youth Medical Team Embarks on Community Health Assessment in Palau, Meets with President

Taiwan and the Pacific nation of Palau have taken another step forward in their bilateral exchanges, with the successful completion of the "GRACE Practice Program" initiated by the Taiwan Long-term Care and Rural Medical Foundation and Fu Jen Catholic University. This team of 16 young Taiwanese medical professionals from diverse backgrounds spent 14 days in Palau conducting an in-depth community health survey. Not only did this showcase the professionalism and enthusiasm of the new generation of Taiwanese medical talent, but they were also personally received by Palau President Tommy Remengesau, marking a new stage of concrete cooperation between the two nations in the fields of public health and medicine.

For a long time, Taiwan and Palau have maintained a close and stable partnership in the field of medical and health care. Through the establishment of Taiwanese medical teams, the construction of distant medical services, and various types of medical personnel exchange training, Taiwan's high-quality medical resources have continued to benefit Palau's local residents. However, with the evolution of global public health challenges, how to expand bilateral cooperation from traditional clinical medical care to grassroots public health, community health, and preventive medicine has become an important direction for the two countries to deepen their relationship. This time, the "GRACE Practice Program" is in line with this trend, allowing Taiwanese young medical workers to enter Palau's communities to face local health needs directly and lay a solid foundation for future long-term cooperation.

During the two-week trip, this group of 16 Taiwanese youth with diverse backgrounds demonstrated their respective professional strengths, conducting in-depth health surveys and exchanges in Palau's community corners. Through on-site visits and observations, the team not only grasped the real challenges faced by local residents in chronic disease prevention, elderly care, and rural medical care, but also engaged in in-depth professional conversations with Palau's local medical personnel. This youth-led, community-driven model of practice broke through the framework of traditional official aid and injected more human warmth and community vitality into Taiwan's diplomatic work, allowing Palau's various sectors to deeply feel Taiwan's practical and warm support for friendly nations.

It's worth noting that during their stay in Palau, these Taiwanese youth were received personally by President Tommy Remengesau. Remengesau expressed high praise and gratitude for Taiwan's youth's visit and participation, and both sides exchanged opinions on how to further deepen Taiwan-Palau cooperation in medical and health care. This meeting not only highlighted Palau's government's emphasis on Taiwan-Palau friendship but also highlighted the unique value of youth medical diplomacy in solidifying bilateral relations. Through face-to-face communication, Palau's high-ranking officials directly heard Taiwan's new generation of medical practitioners' observations and suggestions on grassroots medical care, creating more imagination space for the two countries' future policy alignment in public health.

In the context of global geopolitics and public health security intertwining, Taiwan's medical diplomacy has long been a direction of joint efforts by the government and civil society to demonstrate international participation.
