Taiwanese officials attend Belize's 45th anniversary, boosting education and blue economy cooperation.

Belize celebrated the 45th anniversary of its independence on the 21st of this month. Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Ming-chi, was invited to attend a reception, during which he took the opportunity to reiterate Taiwan's long-term support for and cooperation with Belize. Since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in 1989, the two countries have built more than 37 years of friendship. During this period, Taiwan has continuously provided assistance in areas such as medical care, education, and agriculture, helping Belize upgrade its infrastructure and public services. This celebration not only affirmed past cooperation but also served as an opportunity for both sides to review their future development blueprint.

In his speech at the reception, Chen pointed out that Taiwan will connect its professional talent with Belize's industrial needs through the platform of the Taiwan-Caribbean Academia for Prosperity. Originally focused on cultivating technical and management talent in the Caribbean region, the academy has recently expanded to include emerging fields such as information technology, green energy, and tourism management, aiming to build a bridge for transnational talent mobility. The Deputy Minister emphasized that investing in the education and training of the people and the next generation is fundamental to enhancing the competitiveness of both sides, and it is also a concrete manifestation of Taiwan's long-term commitment to its allies.

Belizean Ambassador to Taiwan Candice Pitts responded that bilateral cooperation has expanded from traditional healthcare and infrastructure to smart agriculture and digital innovation. She mentioned that Belize is actively promoting the Blue Economy initiative, utilizing marine resources to develop sustainable fisheries and coastal tourism, and is in urgent need of relevant technical and management talent. Through the courses and internship mechanisms of the Academia for Prosperity, young people from Belize will have the opportunity to study in Taiwan and, upon returning home, immediately contribute to local industrial upgrading, creating a two-way flow of knowledge and technology.

This statement also highlights Taiwan's strategy of consolidating its existing diplomatic ties through humanitarian and educational assistance on the international diplomatic stage. Facing Mainland China's diplomatic expansion in Latin America and the Caribbean, Taiwan uses concrete and visible cooperative outcomes to enhance the substantial well-being of its allies, thereby stabilizing diplomatic relations. Over the past few years, Taiwan has established multiple medical centers and agricultural demonstration parks in the region, while also providing scholarships and technical consultants, forming a new diplomatic model centered on people.

Looking to the future, cooperation between Taiwan and Belize will focus more heavily on sustainable development and talent cultivation. Both sides have discussed the joint establishment of a green energy demonstration base by 2025, combining solar and offshore wind power technologies to provide stable electricity for Belize's remote islands while opening up new markets for Taiwan's related enterprises. If this project proceeds smoothly, it will not only increase Belize's energy self-sufficiency rate but also create export opportunities for Taiwan's green energy industry, forming a model of mutual benefit and a win-win situation.
