Taiwan Opposition Party's Highway Rally Sparks Food Safety Dispute with Accusations of Political Manipulation

The Kuomintang (KMT) held a large-scale rally on Ketagalan Boulevard today, calling for opposition to specific food safety-related issues. In response to the rally, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) issued a strong statement, publicly criticizing the opposition party's actions, claiming they are not for the public good, but rather intended to create social divisions and are an election operation for a specific political purpose. The exchanges between the ruling and opposition parties on food safety and public issues have once again become a focus of the political scene.

The DPP's spokesperson system stated after the rally that ensuring national health and food safety lies in the close cooperation and mutual assistance between the central government and local governments. The DPP pointed out that many local governments, including the New Taipei City Government and Taoyuan City Government, which are governed by different parties, have already actively implemented inspections and guarded public food safety through existing mechanisms. The ruling party believes that since local administrative agencies at the grassroots level are able to function substantively and perform their duties, the opposition party's massive political mobilization on the streets at this time is unjustified.

The DPP further criticized that the opposition party's leader, the Mayor of the capital city, who should prioritize city governance and citizen welfare, has chosen to lead the political mobilization on the street to protest. The ruling party believes that this approach not only fails to address the substance of the issue but also intentionally exacerbates social tensions, creates divisions, and is irresponsible election operation. The DPP urged that public policy discussions should return to a rational and professional track, rather than achieving political confrontation through rallies.

This rally held on Ketagalan Boulevard has highlighted the long-standing disagreements between the parties in Taiwan regarding major public issues. On one hand, the opposition party wants to express dissatisfaction and make demands to the ruling authorities through rallies; on the other hand, the ruling party emphasizes the importance of the government team's concrete actions and Central-Local cooperation and questions the opposition's motivations.
