Taiwan Foreign Minister Meets Sabah Chief Minister to Advance Tech and Medical Cooperation

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung received a visiting delegation from Malaysia's Sabah State in Taipei yesterday, holding in-depth discussions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conference room. Following the meeting, Lin posted on Facebook, noting that the discussion was not merely a formal interaction between officials, but a practical exchange in the fields of industrial innovation and talent cultivation, laying the foundation for future cooperation.

Official relations between Taiwan and Malaysia have continued to develop since the 1990s, but constrained by the international political environment, both sides have increasingly relied on sub-national interactions to deepen cooperation in recent years. As a major agricultural state in eastern Malaysia, Sabah boasts abundant tropical crop resources and vast arable land, long maintaining strengths in the production of rice, palm oil, and tropical fruits. Consequently, Sabah's need to enhance agricultural added value and introduce new technologies has grown increasingly urgent, which served as one of the core topics of the meeting.

Taiwan has already formed a complete ecosystem in the research, development, and application of smart agriculture, with IoT sensors, agricultural machinery automation, and cloud data platforms widely deployed across domestic farms. Taking smart agriculture demonstration parks as an example, through the integration of real-time weather and soil information, farmers can precisely adjust irrigation and fertilization timing, significantly increasing yield and resource utilization efficiency. During the meeting, Lin presented these cases to the Sabah representatives, explaining that Taiwan's technology is not only applicable to high-value fruits and vegetables, but can also be extended to the management of tropical crops, providing a viable blueprint for Sabah's agricultural upgrading.

In terms of healthcare and talent cultivation, Taiwan likewise possesses successful experiences that can serve as a reference. Smart medical platforms combining remote diagnosis, AI-assisted interpretation, and health management apps enable residents in remote areas to timely access professional medical services. Meanwhile, the industry-academia-research talent cultivation model promoted through the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and the industrial sector has nurtured a cohort of young professionals with cross-disciplinary capabilities in information technology, agriculture, and healthcare. Lin emphasized that if these resources can be combined with Sabah's local needs, it will help enhance local healthcare accessibility and the supply of industrial talent, further promoting long-term mutual benefits for both sides.

Overall, this meeting was not only an exchange of technology and experience, but also symbolized Taiwan's pursuit of mutual growth with regional partners through practical cooperation and the demonstration of its soft power amidst international diplomatic challenges.
