Taiwan deepens New Southbound ties to secure maritime routes and foster prosperity

Speaking publicly in Singapore on the 11th of this month, Representative to Singapore Tung Chen-yuan stated that Taiwan's continuous efforts in the three major areas of diplomacy, defense preparedness, and social resilience have the core objective of maintaining the stability of the economic and social welfare system shared with the region. These remarks were not only an explanation to the Singaporean government but also signaled to Southeast Asian nations that Taiwan is willing to be a partner in regional security and prosperity. In recent years, Taiwan has actively promoted the New Southbound Policy on the international stage, deepening trade, educational, and technological cooperation with ASEAN countries. This demonstrates that its diplomatic layout is no longer confined to traditional allies, but is extending toward the broader Asia-Pacific market.

Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait have long been regarded as key factors in Southeast Asia's economic security. Taiwan is located along vital maritime lanes; the shipping routes connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean carry massive amounts of crude oil and container cargo daily. Any conflict could potentially disrupt shipping, thereby impacting Singapore's function as a global transshipment hub. Over the past few decades, fluctuations in the situation across the Taiwan Strait have repeatedly triggered volatility in international markets, particularly in energy and semiconductor supply chains. Tung pointed out that Taiwan's defense preparedness is not merely for self-defense, but also to protect the unimpeded passage of this critical maritime route, ensuring that regional trade remains free from external shocks.

On the defense front, Taiwan has continuously enhanced its capacity for indigenous weapons and air defense systems in recent years, while strengthening military exchanges and training with friendly nations such as the United States and Japan.
