Chikuhō coalfield

Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan

The Chikuhō coalfield is located on Kyushu Island, Japan. With the promotion of industrial development and the establishment of the Yahata Steel Works, zaibatsu companies and major capital investment led to rapid development of coal mines and the area produced more than half of the nation's coal, making it the largest coal field in Japan before World War II.
