Al-Askari Shrine

The Al-Askari Shrine, also known as the 'Askariyya Shrine and the Al-Askari Mosque, is the mausoleums of the tenth and eleventh Shia Imams, Ali al-Hadi and Ḥasan al- Askari, located in the city of Samarra, Saladin Governorate of Iraq. It is a holy site in Shia Islam. Housed in the mosque are also the tombs of Ḥakīma Khātūn, sister of Imam Hadi; and Narjis Khātūn, the mother of Imam Mahdi. Adjacent to the mosque is another domed commemorative building, built over the cistern where the Twelfth Imam, the Mahdi, first entered the Minor Occultation or "hidden from the view"—whence the other title of the Mahdi, the Hidden Imam.
